It focuses on fashion and lifestyle, as well as coverage of high society and politics. It is targeted towards the British\u00a0<a title=\"Upper class\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper_class\">upper<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Upper-middle class\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Upper-middle_class\">upper-middle classes<\/a>, and people interested in relevant\u00a0<a title=\"High society\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High_society\">society<\/a>\u00a0events. Its readership is the wealthiest of all Cond\u00e9 Nast&#8217;s publications, surpassing other &#8220;glossy&#8221; magazines like\u00a0<i><a title=\"Vogue (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vogue_(magazine)\">Vogue<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Irish Tatler is published by\u00a0<a title=\"Business Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Business_Post\"><i>Business Post<\/i><\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0was introduced on 3 July 1901, by\u00a0<a title=\"Clement Shorter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clement_Shorter\">Clement Shorter<\/a>, publisher of\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Sphere (newspaper)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sphere_(newspaper)\">The Sphere<\/a><\/i>. It was named after the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Tatler (1709 journal)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler_(1709_journal)\">original literary and society journal<\/a>\u00a0founded by\u00a0<a title=\"Richard Steele\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Steele\">Richard Steele<\/a>\u00a0in 1709. Originally sold occasionally as\u00a0<i><b>The Tatler<\/b><\/i><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and for some time a weekly publication, it had a subtitle varying on &#8220;an illustrated journal of society and the drama&#8221;. It contained news and pictures of high society balls, charity events, race meetings, shooting parties, fashion and gossip, with\u00a0<a title=\"Cartoon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cartoon\">cartoons<\/a>\u00a0by &#8220;The Tout&#8221; and\u00a0<a title=\"H. M. Bateman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/H._M._Bateman\">H. M. Bateman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1940, the magazine absorbed\u00a0<i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Bystander\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Bystander\">The Bystander<\/a><\/i>, creating a publication called\u00a0<i>The Tatler and Bystander<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1961, Illustrated Newspapers, which published\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>,\u00a0<i>The Sphere<\/i>, and\u00a0<i><a title=\"The Illustrated London News\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Illustrated_London_News\">The Illustrated London News<\/a><\/i>, was bought by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Roy Thomson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roy_Thomson\">Roy Thomson<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-times1961_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-times1961-5\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>5<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1965,\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0was retitled\u00a0<i>London Life<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-times1965_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-times1965-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-riley1993_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-riley1993-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 1968, it was bought by Guy Wayte&#8217;s Illustrated County Magazine group and the\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0name restored.<sup id=\"cite_ref-guar1968_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-guar1968-8\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>8<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Wayte&#8217;s group had a number of\u00a0<a title=\"Counties of the United Kingdom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Counties_of_the_United_Kingdom\">county<\/a>\u00a0magazines in the style of\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>, each of which mixed the same syndicated content with county-specific local content.<sup id=\"cite_ref-guar1968_8-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-guar1968-8\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>8<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Wayte, &#8220;a moustachioed playboy of a conman&#8221;<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-9\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>9<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0was convicted of fraud in 1980 for inflating\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s circulation figures from 15,000 to 49,000.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-10\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>10<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><i>Hong Kong Tatler<\/i>\u00a0was launched under licence in March 1977,<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-11\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>11<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0the magazines are no longer associated and the Hong Kong edition now operates Tatler publications in Asia and Africa under\u00a0<a title=\"Tatler Asia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler_Asia\"><i>Tatler Asia<\/i><\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-12\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>12<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The magazine was sold and relaunched as a monthly magazine in 1977, called\u00a0<i>Tatler &amp; Bystander<\/i>\u00a0until 1982.<sup id=\"cite_ref-riley1993_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-riley1993-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0<a title=\"Tina Brown\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tina_Brown\">Tina Brown<\/a>\u00a0(editor 1979\u201383), created a vibrant and youthful\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0and is credited with putting the edge, the irony and the wit back into what was then an almost moribund social title. She referred to it as an upper-class comic and by increasing its influence and circulation made it an interesting enough operation for the then owner, Gary Bogard, to sell to publishers\u00a0<a title=\"Cond\u00e9 Nast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cond%C3%A9_Nast\">Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/a>. Brown subsequently transferred to New York, to another Cond\u00e9 Nast title,\u00a0<i><a title=\"Vanity Fair (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanity_Fair_(magazine)\">Vanity Fair<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>After several later editors and a looming recession, the magazine was once again ailing; Jane Procter was brought in to re-invent the title for the 1990s. The circulation rose to over 90,000, a figure which was exceeded five years later by\u00a0<a title=\"Geordie Greig\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geordie_Greig\">Geordie Greig<\/a>. The magazine created various supplements including the Travel and Restaurant Guides, the often-referred to and closely watched\u00a0<i>Most Invited<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Little Black Book<\/i>\u00a0lists, as well as various parties.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Kate Reardon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kate_Reardon\">Kate Reardon<\/a>\u00a0became editor in 2011. She was previously a fashion assistant on American\u00a0<i><a title=\"Vogue (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vogue_(magazine)\">Vogue<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and then, aged 21, became the youngest-ever fashion director of\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-13\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>13<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Under Reardon&#8217;s directorship\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0retained its position as having the wealthiest audience of Cond\u00e9 Nast&#8217;s magazines, exceeding an average of $175,000 in 2013.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-:0-14\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>14<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Reardon left the title at the end of 2017. The appointment of\u00a0<a title=\"Richard Dennen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Dennen\">Richard Dennen<\/a>\u00a0as the new editor was announced at the beginning of February 2018, and he took up the post on 12 February.<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-15\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>15<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the\u00a0<a title=\"BBC\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BBC\">BBC<\/a>\u00a0broadcast a three-part fly-on-the-wall documentary television series, titled\u00a0<i>Posh People: Inside Tatler<\/i>, featuring the editorial team going about their various jobs.<sup id=\"cite_ref-BBC_tatler_1_16-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-BBC_tatler_1-16\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>16<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In 2021,\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i>\u00a0commissioned Nigerian painter\u00a0<a title=\"Oluwole Omofemi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oluwole_Omofemi\">Oluwole Omofemi<\/a>\u00a0to paint the last painting of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Queen Elizabeth II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Queen_Elizabeth_II\">Queen Elizabeth II<\/a>\u00a0before her death.<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatler#cite_note-17\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>17<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mw-heading mw-heading2\">\n<p id=\"Little_Black_Book\"><strong>Little Black Book<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>One of\u00a0<i>Tatler<\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s most talked-about annual features is the\u00a0<i>Little Black Book<\/i>.
