The Quad holds an important place in Manhattan moviegoing history: when it opened October 18, 1972, it was the first theater in the city to have multiple screens under one roof. The original ads touted, \u201cA new way to go to the movies\u201d: unlike the competition, the Quad could screen four films at any given time, not just one. This innovation allowed the theater to thrive for decades while many rivals disappeared or replicated its model; it finally gave New Yorkers the range of cinematic options reflective of their hometown\u2019s diversity.<\/p>\n
With our completely reborn Quad Cinema, we intend to honor that legacy. We have maintained the theater\u2019s name, and its DNA, as well as its head projectionist, and its democratic neighborhood spirit. Just two blocks from Union Square, the Quad sits at a nexus of New York City, a meeting point between uptown and downtown, where students from NYU, The New School, and FIT see movies alongside longtime Village residents. Our programming will give you a little bit of everything: high and low, foreign and domestic, fiction and documentary, arthouse and grindhouse.<\/p>\n
Our renovations have brought the Quad into the 21st century, creating spectacular theater spaces that offer the intimacy and luxury of a high-end private screening rooms, each with a unique look and color scheme: a refined setting typically seen in European cin\u00e9math\u00e8ques, but rare in New York City. In the theaters: 4K Christies and Barcos and 35mm and 16mm projectors, state-of-the-art sound, seats imported from Norway. In the lobby: 32 flat screens forming a twelve by six foot video wall and a 50-foot concession stand. And we are thrilled to introduce the Quad Bar, the perfect place to meet fellow cinephiles and argue about great cinema over a glass of great wine or beer.<\/p>\n
