Wikipedia<\/a><\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0free online encyclopedia<\/a>\u00a0that anyone can edit, and\u00a0millions already have<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wikipedia’s purpose<\/a>\u00a0is to benefit readers by presenting information on all branches of\u00a0knowledge<\/a>. Hosted by the\u00a0Wikimedia Foundation<\/a>, Wikipedia consists of\u00a0freely editable<\/a>\u00a0content, with articles that usually contain numerous links guiding readers to more information.<\/p>\n

Written collaboratively<\/a>\u00a0by volunteers known as\u00a0Wikipedians<\/a>, Wikipedia articles can be edited by anyone with\u00a0Internet access<\/a>, except in\u00a0limited cases<\/a>\u00a0in which\u00a0editing<\/a>\u00a0is restricted to prevent\u00a0disruption<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0vandalism<\/a>. Since its creation on\u00a0January 15, 2001<\/a>, it has grown into the world’s\u00a0largest<\/a>\u00a0reference\u00a0website<\/a>, attracting\u00a0over a billion visitors each month<\/a>. Wikipedia currently has more than\u00a0sixty-five million articles<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0more than 300 languages<\/a>, including 7,005,444 articles in\u00a0English<\/a>, with 115,439 active contributors in the past month.<\/p>\n

Wikipedia’s fundamental principles are summarized in its\u00a0five pillars<\/a>. While the\u00a0Wikipedia community<\/a>\u00a0has developed many\u00a0policies and guidelines<\/a>, new editors do not need to be familiar with them before they start contributing.<\/p>\n

Anyone<\/a>\u00a0can\u00a0edit<\/a>\u00a0Wikipedia’s text, data, references, and images. The quality of content is more important than the expertise of who contributes it. Wikipedia’s content must conform with its\u00a0policies<\/a>, including being\u00a0verifiable<\/a>\u00a0by published\u00a0reliable sources<\/a>. Contributions based on\u00a0personal opinions<\/a>, beliefs, or personal experiences,\u00a0unreviewed research<\/a>, libellous material, and\u00a0copyright violations<\/a>\u00a0are not allowed, and will not remain. Wikipedia’s software makes it easy to reverse errors, and experienced\u00a0editors<\/a>\u00a0watch<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0patrol<\/a>\u00a0bad edits.<\/p>\n

Wikipedia differs from printed references in important ways<\/a>. Anyone can instantly improve it, add quality information, remove misinformation, and fix errors and\u00a0vandalism<\/a>. Since Wikipedia is continually updated, encyclopedic articles on major news events appear within minutes.<\/p>\n

For over 24 years, editors have volunteered their time and talents to create history’s most comprehensive encyclopedia while providing references and other resources to researchers worldwide (see\u00a0Researching with Wikipedia<\/a>). In summary, Wikipedia has tested the\u00a0wisdom of the crowd<\/a> since 2001 and has found that it succeeds.<\/p>\n
