A 30- year lease was taken on it by Gerald Oestreicher, and the opening production was a space musical called\u00a0<em>Via Galactica<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For more than four decades, this house, rechristened the Gershwin on June 5, 1983, has showcased spectacular musicals, concerts, ballets, and plays. The current tenant,\u00a0<em>Wicked<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0has played here since October 2003. Past tenants:\u00a0<em>Oklahoma!<\/em><em>,<\/em><em>\u00a0Riverdance on Broadway, Tango Argentino, Peter Pan, On the Town, 1776, Candide, Show Boat,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Tommy Tune Tonite!.<\/em>\u00a0The colorful Moscow Circus cavorted here in 1991. In 1990,\u00a0<em>Fiddler on the Roof,<\/em>\u00a0starring Topol as Tevye, won the Tony for Best Revival.<\/p>\n<p>A lavishly mounted stage adaptation of\u00a0<em>Meet Me in St. Louis<\/em>\u00a0arrived in 1990 with some additional songs written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, who had created the famed MGM movie score.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987,\u00a0<em>Starlight Express<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, rolled in, with skilled skaters zooming all over the theatre on an ingenious set by John Napier.<\/p>\n<p>In 1985,\u00a0<em>Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em>\u00a0was adapted for the stage by Comden and Green from their original MGM screenplay, with vintage songs by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown\u2014and real rain on stage.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Shakespeare Company, headed by Derek Jacobi and Sin\u00e9ad Cusack, distinguished themselves in 1984 with\u00a0<em>Cyrano de Bergerac<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Much Ado About Nothing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The classic\u00a0<em>Show Boat<\/em>\u00a0docked here in 1983, with Donald O\u2019Connor at the helm as Cap\u2019n Andy. The long-running hit\u00a0<em>Annie<\/em>\u00a0moved here in 1982, and in 1981 the rollicking New York Shakespeare Festival production of\u00a0<em>The Pirates of Penzance<\/em>\u00a0won Tonys for Kevin Kline, director Wilford Leach, and as Best Revival.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, Rex Harrison, Milo O\u2019Shea, Nancy Ringham, and Cathleen Nesbitt returned in a sumptuous revival of\u00a0<em>My Fair Lady<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The 1970s brought the sensational\u00a0<em>Sweeney\u00a0<\/em><em>Todd<\/em>\u00a0by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler. Directed by Harold Prince and starring Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou, the musical won eight Tonys in 1979. In 1977, Yul\u00a0Brynner and Constance Towers triumphed in a revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein\u2019s\u00a0<em>The King and I<\/em><em>,<\/em>\u00a0and the Houston Grand Opera brought its thrilling revival of Gershwin\u2019s\u00a0<em>Porgy and Bess<\/em>\u00a0in 1976. Another Houston Grand Opera production, Scott Joplin\u2019s\u00a0<em>Treemonisha,<\/em>\u00a0performed here for the first time and proved the novelty of the season.
