MISSION AND CORE VALUES

“The Bronx Museum of the Arts is one of the city’s more animated and resilient cultural spaces…and because the Bronx Museum’s exhibitions reflect its constituency, this institution is an important player in shaping New York art of both the present and the future.”
        – The New York Times

MISSION AND BACKGROUND

The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a contemporary art museum that connects diverse audiences to the urban experience through its permanent collection, special exhibitions, and education programs. Reflecting the borough's dynamic communities, the Museum is the crossroad where artists, local residents, national and international visitors meet.

Today an internationally-recognized cultural destination, The Bronx Museum of the Arts is committed to presenting new ideas and voices in a global context and making contemporary art a vital, relevant experience. For the past four decades, the Bronx Museum has presented hundreds of changing exhibitions featuring works by culturally diverse and under-represented artists from a spectrum of levels. Exhibitions have investigated themes of special interest to the Bronx community while exploring the interplay between contemporary art and popular culture. A permanent collection of over 2,000 artworks in all visual media preserves and documents artists who are not typically represented within traditional museum collections by showcasing work by artists of African, Asian, and Latin American ancestry, as well as artists for whom the Bronx has been critical to their development. The Museum provides direct support to artists through Artist in the Marketplace, which nurtures the work of 36 emerging artists each year and provides professional development seminars culminating in a multi-site biennial exhibition and catalogue.

The Museum’s education department empowers students from grades K-12 by offering a variety of programs that inspire academic proficiency, visual literacy, and critical thinking. Through the Group Visits Program, students are exposed to the Museum’s works during single-session tours led by teaching artists. Through In-School Partnerships, Museum Educators work with school teachers to encourage scholastic excellence through the application of arts education techniques. In addition, the Museum’s Teen Council Program helps Bronx high-school students build applied arts and media skills as they create a variety of visual and text-based materials.

CORE VALUES

The Core Values are central to the work being completed by the Museum. They are a guide for the creation of new programs and exhibitions and one of the tools used for their evaluation as well.

BUILDING COMMUNITIES locally, city-wide, nationally and internationally through vibrant art, education, and public programs that promote collaboration and the exchange of ideas.

NURTURING CREATIVITY through public programs that support cultural expression and engage diverse audiences in the art and ideas of our time.

ENRICHING LIVES by creating meaningful experiences for all generations that promote personal discovery, exploration, and experimentation.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE BRONX by functioning as an economic catalyst and community anchor that makes the Bronx a great place to live, work, and gather.

FOSTERING INNOVATION by creating opportunities to explore diverse perspectives on new thoughts, ideas, and technologies.

POPULATION SERVED

The Bronx Museum has an established reputation as a contemporary art museum that strives to serve diverse audiences, including local Bronx families, residents across New York City and the tri-State area, and international tourists. Specifically, the Bronx is one of the most ethnically and socio-economically varied constituencies in U.S., composed largely of Latino and African American populations as well as increasing audiences originally from West Africa and the Caribbean.

HISTORY

In its first decade, The Bronx Museum of the Arts was housed in the public rotunda of the Bronx County Courthouse located on Grand Concourse and 161st Street. In 1982, it moved five blocks north on the Concourse to 165th street into a former synagogue purchased and donated by the City of New York. As part of the Museum's initiative to expand the scope of its youth and family programs, it began an ambitious capital project to enhance its facility.  In February 2004, The Museum began construction on a 16,000 sq. ft. building to the north of the existing facility. Its design by the Miami-based firm Arquitectonica was awarded the "Excellence in Design" prize by The Art Commission of the City of New York in 2003. The $19 million space opened in October 2006 and features a major gallery, flexible events / program spaces, an outdoor terrace, and an entire floor dedicated to education programs and classrooms.
