Our Story
NYU Langone Health is one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers. Our trifold mission to serve, teach, and discover is achieved daily through an integrated academic culture devoted to excellence in patient care, education, and research.
Located in the heart of Manhattan, with additional facilities throughout the New York City area, NYU Langone consists of six inpatient locations:
- Tisch Hospital, an acute-care hospital in Manhattan where we care for people of all ages, from newborns in our neonatal intensive care unit to adults who need medical, surgical, or obstetrical care
- Kimmel Pavilion, a state-of-the-art, digitally integrated healthcare facility adjacent to Tisch Hospital, offering general and subspecialty surgical services, intensive care, and the most advanced digital diagnostic technology
- NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, formerly known as Hospital for Joint Diseases, a dedicated inpatient orthopedic hospital in Manhattan
- Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, which provides pediatric inpatient care, outpatient care, procedural and surgical services, the KiDS Emergency Department, and multiple ambulatory services
- NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, formerly known as NYU Lutheran Medical Center, a full-service teaching hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
- NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, formerly known as NYU Winthrop Hospital, which provides inpatient and outpatient medical care throughout our network of Long Island healthcare facilities
At Rusk Rehabilitation, ranked as one of the top 10 rehabilitation programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report since 1989, we also provide rehabilitation care at locations throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Long Island. Our inpatient rehabilitation programs at Tisch Hospital and NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Specialists at NYU Langone treat a full range of medical conditions in both inpatient and outpatient settings at locations throughout New York City’s five boroughs, Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester County, and Florida. Our outpatient care also includes the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, one of the largest Federally Qualified Health Center networks in the nation.
Our growing outpatient network brings our world-class medical services directly to the communities where our patients live and work. When more complex care is needed, we bridge the gap between our community-based practices and our hospitals to provide a seamless healthcare experience.
Through our NYU Langone Health app, our patients can also access information about their care anytime and anywhere. By signing into the app with an NYU Langone Health MyChart account, patients can schedule appointments—including Virtual Urgent Care visits and most types of imaging exams—have video visits with certain types of doctors, view test results and health records, message your doctors, request prescription refills, pay medical bills, and more.
As part of our strategy to provide access to healthcare at the convenience of our patients, we continue to expand the number of diagnostic and treatment procedures that are available on weekends, a time traditionally limited to emergency care. We have also implemented more accessible tools for patients to review their health information, such as NYU Langone Health MyChart.
NYU Langone is also affiliated with NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull in Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and NYC Health + Hospitals/Gouverneur in Manhattan, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

At NYU Langone, we emphasize treating the whole person and not simply the disease. For the last eight years, our faculty group practice network has been top ranked among participating medical centers nationwide. In 2022, NYU Langone ambulatory care practices ranked No. 1 in Vizient’s Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Ranking for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality outpatient care.
In addition, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island were each awarded an “A” Hospital Safety Grade in the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction that recognizes NYU Langone’s achievement in providing the highest level of patient care across the health system and an honor attained by only 33 percent of hospitals across the country.

Performing Research Leading to Groundbreaking Discoveries
Our mission to advance science and improve healthcare through scientific discovery brings together outstanding scientists and clinical researchers—at both NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Long Island School of Medicine—fostering highly collaborative, multidisciplinary investigations. This teamwork inspires new ideas and discoveries, and helps to quickly translate scientific advances into innovative ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
All of our scientists have access to state-of-the-art technology in more than 20 core facilities, from analytic chemistry and bioinformatics to tissue banking and genomics.
NYU Langone has long been an incubator for pioneering scientific breakthroughs. In fact, four alumni and current or former faculty of NYU Grossman School of Medicine are recipients of the Nobel Prize in either Chemistry or Physiology or Medicine.
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
The Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)—a collaborative effort among NYU Langone, New York University (NYU), and NYC Health + Hospitals—aims to rapidly advance science from the lab to the bedside and out into the community. Scientists at CTSI are positioned to identify health problems and promote new evidence-based medicine, thereby reducing healthcare disparities across a wide range of communities.
Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center
As the focal point of our translational research efforts, the Joan and Joel Smilow Research Center, which opened in 2006, houses multidisciplinary research teams dedicated to cancer, cardiovascular biology, dermatology, genetics, and infectious diseases.
The 13-story, 230,000-square-foot facility has an open-bench integrated design to promote interaction among colleagues, and is adaptable to the changing needs of investigators.
Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center
The research mission of the Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer Center is to discover the origins of cancer and use that knowledge to eradicate the personal and societal burden of the disease. As a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Perlmutter Cancer Center is recognized for its basic laboratory, translational, and clinical research. Our five primary research areas include cancer genome dynamics, cancer cell biology, melanoma, tumor immunology, and epidemiology and cancer control.
There are 12 Disease Management Groups that bridge medical disciplines and areas of research dedicated to specific types of cancer such as breast or lung. Through translational research, our investigators are finding new ways to integrate the extraordinary progress and understanding of cancer coming out of basic research with the need for new clinical therapies to treat a variety of cancers. In fact, our patients are participating in a broad range of innovative clinical trials at Perlmutter Cancer Center.
Neuroscience Institute
Entering a new era of neuroscience, we are expanding on our existing strengths and extensive expertise in neuroscience research, focusing on discoveries that move from theory to therapy to improve brain health. The Neuroscience Institute is a collaborative and interdisciplinary enterprise of basic, translational, and clinical scientists from across NYU Langone and NYU, whose research spans molecular, cellular, systems, cognitive, behavioral, and computational approaches to revolutionize our understanding of human thought and mental health.
Insight into how we develop finely tuned nervous systems that allow us to perceive and interact with our surroundings, and learn from and remember our experiences, informs translational and clinical research on a wide variety of neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, addiction, mood disorders, and autism spectrum disorders.
Transforming Medical Education
Founded in 1841, NYU School of Medicine was renamed in 2019 to honor current dean and CEO Robert I. Grossman, MD, as NYU Grossman School of Medicine. As one of the nation’s preeminent medical schools, NYU Grossman School of Medicine has trained thousands of physicians and scientists who have helped shape the course of medical history and enrich the lives of countless people. Continuing its commitment to improve the human condition through medical education, patient care, and scientific research, in 2019 NYU Langone Health partnered with NYU to form NYU Long Island School of Medicine, a three-year medical school located at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island.
As leaders in medical education reform, we believe that the model of medical education should address the current changes in scientific, social, and economic circumstances, as well as the dramatic changes in the healthcare delivery system. As part of our tuition-free initiative, we are proud to award all students enrolled in our MD degree programs at both NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Long Island School of Medicine Full-Tuition Scholarships at both NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Long Island School of Medicine so that any student can pursue the dream of becoming a physician without the burden of overwhelming student debt.
NYU Grossman School of Medicine
NYU Grossman School of Medicine is ranked No. 2 in the nation for research on the 2023 U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings, and has earned national attention by reimagining medical education, including its tuition-free initiative, its Curriculum for the 21st Century program, also known as C21, and the accelerated three-year MD program.
C21 is structured using a spiral curriculum, or pillars, where learning wraps around and builds upon specific areas of medicine. C21 is designed to foster knowledge by having students examine the scientific underpinnings of a disease while they simultaneously learn through direct patient care. Students begin seeing patients the first week of medical school and follow some of those same patients throughout their time at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
Leveraging the latest technology, medical learning is enhanced through the Program for Medical Education and Technology, which includes web-based training in surgery. In addition, NYU Grossman School of Medicine uses a variety of simulation modalities for clinical teaching, including an online 3D interactive virtual human body called the BioDigital Human, the virtual microscope, and the New York Simulation Center for Health Sciences (NYSIM), a partnership with The City University of New York.
With 29 academic departments in the clinical and basic sciences, and more than 100 divisions, programs, and centers, NYU Langone provides one of the broadest educational experiences available. NYU Langone also maintains affiliations with area hospitals, including the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System and Bellevue, the nation’s oldest public hospital, where NYU Grossman School of Medicine students provide care to New York City’s diverse population, enhancing the scope and quality of their education and training.
In addition to the medical degree, NYU Grossman School of Medicine collaborates with NYU to offer distinguished dual MD/master’s degrees. Students can apply for programs to earn an MBA or degrees in public administration, global health, translational research, and bioethics. NYU Grossman School of Medicine also sponsors residency and fellowship training programs, as well as continuing medical education courses for practicing physicians. Of note, we offer three-, four-, and five-year pathways to the MD degree, providing students individualized education, a central tenet of C21.
For aspiring physician–scientists, our Medical Scientist Training Program is designed to give residents and fellows the skills needed to conduct the highest caliber of scientific research. Our Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, a division of the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science, offers programs in the basic medical sciences leading to a PhD and, in coordination with the Medical Scientist Training Program, a combined MD/PhD.
NYU Long Island School of Medicine
NYU Long Island School of Medicine focuses on educating physicians and academic leaders in primary care, and preparing its students to deliver outstanding patient care and become authorities in local and national health systems. Its three-year curriculum combines medical education, research, and quality patient care, and reduces the traditional medical school curriculum by one full year. Full-Tuition Scholarships are offered to all matriculated students, making it more financially feasible for students to choose careers in the important fields of primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
Basic, translational, and clinical research are integrated with population health and health systems science to create a scientifically rigorous learning environment that is also diverse, inclusive, comprehensive, and compassionate. These innovations are paired with a structured career and academic advising program that involves academic coaching, specialty advising, and monthly learning community sessions to offer a truly personal approach to medical education.
